Living and Learning Neighborhood Receives National Recognition

University of California, San Diego was awarded ULI Americas Award for Excellence for their new mixed-use college campus — the aptly named North Torrey Pines Living and Learning Neighborhood. The Living Learning Neighborhood was completed in 2021 under a $535 million design-build contract with Clark Construction, HKS, Inc, and Safdie Rabines Architects.

Andre Gomez, founding partner at Andre Architecture, played a key role in securing the commission back in 2017, with subsequent design and execution of 200,000 SF Arts and Humanities and Social Sciences Administrative building. Andre championed this effort while working as an Associate Project Manager at Safdie Rabines Architects. Ricardo Rabines, founding partner of Safdie Rabines, applauded Andre’s involvement as “instrumental”, prior to Andre’s departure from the company in 2019.

The Urban Land Institute recognized the impact of this ground-breaking build-out, integrating outdoor spaces, technology and mixed-use programming with integration and technology: “[the project] responds with the highest levels of environmental stewardship, achieving LEED Platinum for all buildings and an AIA COTE© Top Ten Award.”
