"The Collectors" Shortlisted in International Design Competition

Andre Architecture has won a shortlist honor as part of an open, international design competition. The competition, held on behalf of the Burning Man Organization and in conjunction with the Land Art Generator Institute, called for design proposals to address  shelter, water, and energy infrastructure as part of a remote permanent community in Gerlach, Nevada. The 185 acre site is intended to serve as a model community for integration of art science and design. The competition also required solutions to address the global environmental crisis through implementation of carbon reduction efforts.

The Collectors respond to the Burning Man Organization’s fundamental needs for basic utility and construction adaptability with a simple solution of modular, structural framework. The cubic form, a platonic shape of equal sides, becomes a repeatable construction element that is expanded to provide shelter for facilitation of research, short-term housing, and recreation. The roofed pavilion also serves as a harvesting point for collecting solar power and rainwater. The 20x20x20 pavilion is a lightweight, deployable design that can quickly change with the new community. With The Collectors, Andre Architecture expands their work in masterplanning and infrastructure design, building upon the work they did for Housing the Next 1 Million and reaffirming their study of the art-sciences.

This work was featured as an excerpt in the hardcover book, Land Art of the 21st Century, published by Hirmer Publishers, by editors Elizabeth Monoian and Robert Ferry.
